We were lucky to have Alex Cohen, Director of Operations at Bath Rugby visit Kingsbridge Community College on 13th January.
Alex is responsible for the day-to-day running of Bath Rugby and has overall responsibility for the club on match days. He is currently very busy with the project management of the new Bath Rugby stadium build which is due to be completed by 2023.
In the IT department, we have a new BTEC in Digital Applications; for part of this course students have to look at project management skills centred around planning and building software for a sporting stadium. Alex kindly offered to come to Kingsbridge, talk us through his job and give us an idea of the scope and difficulty that the challenge of building an inner-city stadium entails. I think it’s fair to say that we were blown away by the sheer magnitude of planning involved and of course the cost of such a venture. Alex is already in year three of the planning stage: the bid to the council for planning is only due to be sent in February this year and they have already spent £3 million!
There was also lots of opportunity to talk sports science, and the PE department were keen for our year 11 GCSE students to have a look at the science involved in such a venture. It was fascinating to discuss specifics of personalised nutrition and the specifications of home and away facilities.
